Toru Ota was born in Tokyo on November 3rd, 1958. He started out his career at Fuji Television after graduating from Waseda University in 1981. He was initially assigned to the News Department as a TV journalist to cover the Metropolitan Police Department. He then successfully advanced his career in various positions within the company which include Public Relations, producer of the Infotainment Department, deputy director of the Programming Department and head of the department in charge of dramas and variety programs. He is currently the Executive Officer and Managing Director of the Content Creation and Distribution Department.
The dramas that he produced in the late '80s and the early '90s founded the golden era of the famous "trendy dramas." Some of his best known dramas include "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" (1988) "Tokyo Love Story" (1991) "The 101st Proposal" (1991) "In the Name of Love" (1992) "Under the Same Roof" (1993) "Tokyo Cinderella Story" (1994) "Pride" (2004) and "Last Christmas" (2004).
He has also extended his career into film making and "Twixt Calm and Passion" (2001) "Amalfi" (2009) are among the titles that he has produced.
